Lok Jeevan Vikas Bharti

ALok Jeevan Vikas Bharti (LJVB) founded in 1977 works in the area of education in remote areas of Tehri Garhwal District. In the past, organization worked on women empowerment by engaging then in income generation activities. The Hans Foundation has been supporting the organization since 2013 to provide residential educational facilities to 75 girls.
Organization has own its campus and infrastructure with buildings and other facilities spread across 3 acres. Girls from marginalized sections are selected to provide education up to 8th standard. In this school food, accommodation, education and other things are provided to the girls. Students follow a scheduled regime every day, which starts early in the morning at 5 where they start with morning prayers & breakfast followed by school classes, lunch, extracurricular activities and dinner. The school is recognized by education department and the curriculum for classes 1st to 5th is followed as their guidelines. The curriculum for classes 6th to 8th is followed as per the guidelines of National Curriculum (NCERT).

Present Proposal: Residential Basic Education & Allied Services For Sustainable Life Development (April 2016 – March 2017)
Present proposal for a period of one year starting from October 2016 envisages to continue residential facilities to 75 girls and adding 25 more students. These students are from the most disadvantaged sections of the community. Girls are selected from such families and counselled to accommodate in the school. Besides the curriculum and extra-curricular activities, all boarding and lodging facilities are provided to the students. Qualified teachers and trained staff are available to take care of all needs of the students. School uniform, reading material, note books, stationary, three-time food and refreshment is provided to the residential students.

Students will be sensitized to personal hygiene by engaging a doctor on part time basis, who will conduct regular health check-ups of the students. Students are encouraged to prepare for competition by increasing their access to information. A computer lab with internet facility will be developed in the campus, where the students can access any academic information. Parent-teacher meetings will be conducted on regular basis to review and monitor the progress of students and to improve the quality of education.
For the students of 6-8 class vocational trainings will be provided on tailoring and stitching so that after passing out from the schools they may earn an income by themselves.

Purkal

The Purkal Youth Development Society was established in the year 2000 to provide high quality education to the underprivileged children. The society is committed to provide free, world-class education to the poorest children. It has developed such an environment where all students get emotional, physical, spiritual and intellectual support.
It has been covering villages in and around Purkal and providing support to boys and girls up to the 12th standard. It doesn’t function outside this community of 41 villages and covering a population of over 15,000. It has gained affiliation from CBSE till 12th class on 1st April 2011. It has also started the hostel facilities for 60 girls and hired a rental accommodation for 24 boys along with a teacher for senior secondary students. The organization is not only teaching them but also preparing them for competitive examinations so that their students get admission in top notch professional institutes.
PYDS has a full- fledged e-laboratory created with the support of the Merchant Taylor’s School, Northwood, UK. At present, PYDS receives funding from 400 individual philanthropists, corporate and foundations. THF has been supporting this school over the past 6 years.
The school has been supporting around 375 children. The credibility of the society has also been established by the certification received from Charity Aid Foundation, Give India, and Credibility Alliance etc.

Proposal: Change 125 Rural Lives (Oct 2016 – Sep 2017)
The society realizes that children in this area need hope and mentorship, in addition to health, nutrition, education and counselling services, so that they create better opportunities for themselves. It has demonstrated that excellence is possible among rural poor by providing these inputs. It is identifying children with academic potential and nurturing them towards the path of excellence. It is only through this methodology that that they will become the change agents of future. The organization is not only focusing on education but also helping youth to develop a positive attitude towards life. So that they can understand that there is honest way to live, work and prosper.
The following deliverables are covered in this project:

  • Academic performance of the students: It is using xSeed curriculum which is designed for activity based learning.
  • Physical Fitness: To keep track body mass index of all our students for their physical fitness.
  • Vaccination and Inoculation: The project has tied up with various doctors and makes sure that the children are properly vaccinated and inoculated. All records are carefully mentioned.
  • Nutrition and Emotional Support: It provides four feeds a day to every student who is enrolled with us to keep them mentally and physically strong.
  • Uniforms:  It provides free uniforms to all the students for summer and winter.
  • Transport: It also provides transportation facility to all students.
  • Field trips: It organizes 15 local trips for every year for each student and two long trips of 15 days.

Other components of the program are dance, music, yoga, sports and learning resources.

Kaivalya Education Foundation

Kaivalya Education Foundation was established in 2008 to improve the public education system in India. Its vision is to transform 1 million schools of India to impact the lives of 100 million children annually. It has been successfully working in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. At present, KEF is impacting more than 2,50,000 students in more than 1000 schools with the staff capacity of about 500 professionals.

Project: School Transformation Program (STP)
The overall objective of the project is to improve the learning levels of 5000+ children studying in 100 government schools of Bageshwar district by 2020. The idea of the project is to build leadership, administrative and management skills in principals, teachers and community stakeholders.
The major strategies of the program are:

  • School Leadership: A four year in service program for education officers i.e. principals, teachers and education officers to develop their administrative and management skills.
  • Community Leadership: Interventions are made on youth, parents and school management committees (SMCs).
  • 5000+ Children: It will impact the learnings levels of five thousand students in kapkot block of Bageshwar district.
  • 100 Principals: It will enhance the leadership and management skills of the principals in government schools.
  • 200 teachers – It will develop the instructional, transactional and pedagogical skills of the teachers by the end of program tenure.
  • 10 Education Officers – Administrative and leadership skills of the education officers will be optimised by the end of the program.
    This project will directly benefit 5000 students, 100 principals, 200 teachers and 10 education officers.

Former US President Bill Clinton serves as an honorary Chair and Noble Laureate Amartya Sen Chairs the advisory council.

Project: Digital Equaliser for Uttarakhand Schools
The project is called Digital Equaliser for Uttarakhand schools and is to be implemented in 100 schools in the state of Uttarakhand. The beneficiaries of the project are all the subject teachers of all 100 schools and students from classes 6th to 8th. The project was initiated with the idea to impact 500 teachers and 25,000 students.
The 100 schools were spread across 3 districts of Uttarakhand and grouped as clusters and each cluster has 30 schools situated closed to each other within a radius of 20kms so that the training and monitoring can be conveniently conducted by the coordinator assigned to the cluster.
In order to bolster the DE program, 2 hubs or 2 tablabs were set up in 2 central locations which would have 20-30 Tablets, Laptop with projector as AV Room, White Board and curriculam content. A web based Management Information System (MIS) was put in place and all data was entered and analysed by AIF team.

Beyond Uttarakhand

The Hans Foundation’s ‘Uttarakhand 2020’ project will change the lives of millions in Uttarakhand. The Hans Foundation will actively advocate for and fund similar pilot projects in other states across India. This will facilitate awareness and adoption of best practices in other states. The Hans Foundation extends an open invitation to other NGOs and government agencies in the upcoming years to observe the results of this revolutionary project.
